Bowen is a unique non intrusive complementary hands on therapy/bodywork, based on theory that gentle moves over precise points of the body can prompt the body’s innate ability to relieve pain, restriction and imbalance without the need for deep, manipulative or forceful treatment.
The gentle moves on soft tissue stimulate physiological changes & energy flow, empowering the body’s own resources to heal itself. Due to the gentle nature of the therapy, it can be used on anyone: from newborns to seniors. It is used to address variety of conditions, both chronic and acute.
Bowen Therapy treatment is pleasant – therapists use light, cross-fibre manoeuvres of muscle, tendon or ligament with no forceful manipulation. Treatment is usually done through the light clothes, no lotions or oils are used. There is no cracking, probing or other kind of forceful manipulation.
Sometimes people do not expect such a powerful effect after such a gentle and light manipulations. However, our bodies do not always need rough manipulations in order to be healed. Moreover, sometimes stronger manipulations will put the body into stress and defensive mode.
Bowen therapy is effective because, with a minimum of stress on the body, it focuses the innate healing capacity of the body exactly where it is needed to facilitate speedy recovery, pain relief and healing.
Bowen often helps where the other therapies fail.
Treatment usually does not need to be continuous, and often just a very few sessions will change the situation
Developed by the late Tom Bowen in Australia, it is a unique system that has amazed therapists of all disciplines
” A dynamic and powerful therapy that quickly resets the body’s structure and addresses pain using a specific sequence of gentle muscle rolls.”(c)

Nishi System came from Japan and was created by Japanese health pioneer Katsudzo Nishi who was able to overcome his health ailments by creating, practicing and teaching this system. He’s done an extensive research by studying all kinds of the oriental and occidental, preventative and traditional medicine.
Nishi system is based on theory that, while the human bone structure and positioning of the internal organs are basically the same as in mammals who walk on four legs, humans have adopted a different upright two-legged life style. This causes certain structural strains on the human spine, affecting circulation, causing misalignments of the spine and related issues, and also in problems like obstruction of the flow of food through the intestines.
Another principle of Nishi system is based on theory that the network of capillaries plays a role of the driving force for the blood flow and also act as the “second heart”.
This theory was also first suggested by a group of physicians in Europe in the 19th century.
Nishi developed efficient approaches to compensate for these structural defects through series of unique corrective vibrational, stretching exercises and other practices.
he suggest sleeping on a firm bed, with a half cylinder roll-pillow under the neck.
Some of the practices help to relieve the undue pressure on the spinal nerves and may correct irregularities of the spinal vertebrae, others normalize metabolism at the cellular level, promote circulation and improve the elasticity of the blood vessels and helps to remove the bad cholesterine plaque. It also helps the function of the gastrointestinal tract, assisting in the waste elimination, it is useful for the proper functioning of the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels around pelvis, abdomen, and thighs.
Some other practices of Nishi system help to release the trapezius muscles, then stimulate the vagus nerves in and help to eliminate tension headaches.
Nishi made his system available to public first in Japan, then while traveling and teaching it in USA in 1927. In July of 1936, he gave a lecture on Nishi System of Health Optimization in front of 6000 people.
All the benefits, practices and exercises are usually highlighted, taught and practiced during the classes that run on Tuesdays, at 1:30 in the Community Room in Fiddleheads.
Meditation with colours complements each of the classes.
