Tina has been in private practice since 1999 servicing the Halton region and more recently the Kitchener Waterloo region. She believes in working in partnership with an individual to enhance the most effective and long term outcome. Tina is a full time faculty member at Humber College (2002) teaching in the Child and Youth Worker Diploma (CYW) and Child and Youth Care Degree (CYC) programs. She has also taught at Ryerson University in the CYC Degree program. Tina is a Certified Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist and has sat on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Child and Play Therapy (CACPT). Tina is Chair of Marketing for CACPT and past Chair of Education and Training for play therapy Canada. Tina has taught in the Play Therapy certification program. Tina is in the process of completing her Applied Mindful Meditation Certificate through the University of Toronto. Her latest project is the creation of a program in mindfulness for children and youth in relation to sports. The program will assist individuals to apply mindful grounding exercises and meditation to support the stress, anxieties and fears that exist when competing.
In her practice Tina uses a variety of approaches that suit the needs of an individual (cognitive behaviour therapy, solution focus, mindfulness, mediation, psychotherapy etc.). Tina works in conjunction with an individual to empower and enlighten ones sense of self. Gaining the insight to ones emotions, reactions and behaviours enhances the ability to create strategies that will empower and evoke change. Tina’s objective is to support individuals through the daily challenges of life while realigning their sense of self.
The teenage years can be extremely challenging as youth are faced with increasing pressure and demands in academics, home, future and socially. Anxiety, depression, self esteem and identity are common struggles that youth face. Tina works with the adolescent to develop coping strategies that will equip them to manage their difficulties in ways that enhances understanding and awareness. Tina and the youth will work together to gain a sense of power and contentment.
Child Play Therapy
Tina utilizes a variety of techniques in her work with children. Through directive and non directive work Tina supports a child through their fears, anxieties and worries (to name a few). Children get a sense of comfort and support when they explore issues in a safe environment. Tina utilizes storytelling, puppetry, sandtray, relaxation, music, cognitive-behaviour therapy, arts, crafts and games to engage a child at their level and provide them insight, growth and change in a way that they can relate to. Tina aims to empower children to feel in control of their thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
Tina believes that in order to evoke change in ones family all members need to be open to the process. Tina will work with parents to enhance their insight on childhood and teenage issues while providing concrete strategies and techniques. As parents add to their toolbox and are able to gain insight to their child’s needs their relationship with each other and their child enhances. In partnership the focus is to break down barriers and misconceptions in order to recreate a respectful family environment that supports open communication and understanding.
“Tina has been able to engage my husband in the process of his healing, something I find amazing as he is one who believes therapy is great for everyone but himself. In a very short time, Tina has helped my husband and we can see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
“I started seeing Tina Lackner when I was 16. I am now 30 and my work with her is the reason I enjoy a healthy relationship with my family, friends, husband and most importantly with myself.”
“Tina is an incredible person and therapist. She is energetic, approachable, and able to connect with our daughter and us as parents. Tina has had such a positive impact on our lives. She has been able to get our daughter to open up and taught her strategies to manage her anxiety. Not only has she helped our daughter but she has helped us as parents to better manage situations and understand what our daughter is going through. After an appointment our daughter is excited and feels good about herself. As parents we leave the appointment with new ideas on coping and how to help our daughter. We cannot say enough good things about Tina. She is incredible!”
