I love that Staples commercial on Back to School. Haven’t seen it this year but it is one of my favorites. I can hear mothers singing the song all over the world. As much as we enjoyed them home for the summer it is time to return to school and with that comes stress about school lunches.
Involve your kids in the purchasing of lunch items but do set some boundaries before you go. Encourage whole foods and fun containers to put them in. Remind them of the environment and how everyone needs to do their part. Kids are more in tune with this these days and will be on board. This will eliminate the arguments at the packaged Lunchables section!!
You can find reusable drinking boxes in a variety of great colors at all Fiddleheads locations. There is also a great selection of protected glass and steel water bottles. While you are there pick up a copy of this month’s Alive Magazine. It is a back to school edition and is full of great tips and recipes.
Wash and chop veggies and keep in large containers in the fridge. Spiral sandwich wraps cut into slices and sandwiches made with cookie cutters are a great way to make lunches more appealing to the eye. Fiddleheads has a vast selection of healthy breads to choose from including gluten free and sprouted wheat, which is easier to digest and better tolerated by many. Some great fillings are cream cheese and cucumber, tuna or chicken salad or roasted veggies with pesto and goat cheese or whatever spreads your kids enjoy. Make it part of their routine to make lunches right after dinner. This will take the stress out of weekday mornings and ensure everyone is eating healthy which makes it easier to concentrate and learn at school.
View some great lunch recipes from Alive Magazine (the energy balls would be a better after school pick up as they do contain nuts )
